Secondary Curriculum

Welcome to the Secondary School of Dubai British School.

The Secondary School covers the ages of 11-16, and is split into two distinct stages, Keys Stage 3 (11-13) and Key Stage 4 (14-16).  At this stage of their education, this is where students break away from the majority of their learning being supported by one teacher, to subject specialists delivering the curriculum.  At DBS we follow the National Curriculum for England and Wales, whilst also delivering content specific to our locality.  All subject teachers are British Qualified and work within their specialisms.
  • Core Subjects: English, Mathematics and Science
  • Humanities: Geography and History
  • Modern Languages: French, Spanish and Arabic
  • Social Sciences: Psychology, Sociology, Business and Economics
  • Expressive Arts: Drama, Music, DT and Art
  • Physical Education: recreational PE and Exam PE
The focus of the Secondary School is aimed at supporting every student, whether that be following a traditional academic route, or having a more tailored bespoke curriculum delivered.  Whilst we celebrate students’ attainment, for us the most important feature within the school is a students’ progress and adding as much value as we can during a students’ time at the school.  This works due to our small class sizes, highly trained staff, our well developed and embedded pastoral team and the strong home-school partnerships that are formed between the school and parents.  Our whole school ethos of ‘enjoy, aspire, achieve’ underpins the day to day practice within the Secondary School.

The Subject Overviews are designed to provide a brief summary overview of the topics and when they will be covered during the course of the year. They are very much a ‘headline’ sheet, and for further information on detailed content and assessment, they should be used with the programme of study sheets (which shall be released in August).

At Key Stage 3, we have moved away from National Curriculum Levels, with an increased focus upon the mastery of skills that students will need to be successful.  The new pathway model is aimed at identifying the key skills and content required in a subject and ensuring these are mastered, in preparation for GCSE. Subjects use Key Assessment Objectives to assess student performance, and these are available on the pathway overviews and subject programmes of study.

Identifying a student pathway (benchmarking) will be conducted using a range of information about each student.

· Hard data in the form of Key Stage 2 information, external CEM information, and performance in class assessments over the first 4 to
  6 weeks.

· Soft data in the form of a students’ educational background, exposure to specific subjects, and EAL and taking consideration of a students’
  Special Educational Needs

In Year 8, a pathway 6 would mean you are working at a grade 6 within the Year 8 Scheme of Work. In Year 9, a pathway 6 would mean you are working at a grade 6 within the Year 9 Scheme of Work.

· Maintaining a pathway grade shows good progress; as a Year 9 pathway 6 is more challenging than a Year 8, with new content and skills

It is expected that a student will stay within a pathway during the course of a year.  A Pathway 5 would reflect a student working at Curriculum expectation, with a pathway 6 and 7, reflecting performance above curriculum expectations.

During a report cycle, students will also receive a ‘fine grade’ showing their position within a pathway.

· Emerging – means the student is currently working at the lower end of the level, their grasp of the grade is insecure, and they could drop to
the level below if they do not take action

· Consolidating – indicates the student is secure in the level

· Mastering – indicates the student is consistently working at this level and starting to move towards the next pathway (a decision which will
take place at the end of the year, unless in exceptional circumstances)

All Key Assessment Objectives are shared through the curriculum page.
